The Blue Fairy changes Pinocchio into a real boy: "But he had no idea! That nutty fairy had changed him while he was asleep." Pinocchio has to find work, but it's hard to find a job when you think you're a puppet while the world sees you as real. Smith has a good deal of fun with Pinocchio's identity crisis, and there's enough affection in the pictures to keep this from too-cool postmodern absurdity.
