The danger Steven faces in the boxing ring is mirrored outside it when he meets a charismatic delinquent who could be Steven's ticket to obtaining the money he needs for a boxing tournament in San Diego. The circumstances leading Steven to consider crime feel contrived, and the novel's ending is unsatisfyingly abrupt, but the gritty first- person narrative vividly evokes the fight scenes.
