Ruby's pets have trouble minding. Dog makes muddy footprints in the house and blames them on his friends. Hippo is too noisy. While Dog, caught in the act, gets a good-natured rebuke for fibbing, Hippo's noisiness eventually makes him a hero. Both books lack much substance but feature warm characters; the illustrations are bright and spare. Didacticism makes Muddy Dog less successful than its companion volume.
