Twelve-year-old illiterate thief Smith steals a document that turns out to hide life-changing secrets. The Newgate Jail and the dank underworld of London two hundred years ago; the unusual cast of characters; the rapid movement of events; and the quick, zestful writing make the story fresh and absorbing. This new edition lacks Antony Maitland's line illustrations, but the bookmaking is understatedly handsome.
