The Rumpelstiltskin story is expanded into a multigenerational tale of greed, revenge, and lost loves. A simple tailor is not allowed to marry his pregnant lover, who is instead betrothed to a surly miller. Their child, Saskia, grows into the gifted spinner later aided by her natural father in spinning straw into gold. Although the writing is sometimes lyrical, the story is overly long.
