Bossy Frances Schotz's plans for a Fourth of July pageant threaten to deny House Jackson and his teammates their annual baseball game. The ensuing compromise involves a multitude of characters, and readers may need a scorecard to keep up with them all. Still, Wiles's talent for chapter-ending cliffhangers (the story was first serialized in the Boston Globe) keeps readers engaged.
