Young German girl Marta and her papa are passengers on the Lusitania during WWI. They both survive its sinking, but Papa is captured and imprisoned. Marta, taken in by an Irish family in England, hides her German identity, aided by her acting skills and facility with accents. The appealing heroine’s arc is set within an engaging adventure, though readers may be quicker than Marta and others to grasp the novel’s messages against prejudices tied to war. An author’s note adds historical background.
