Living in Malonia, a magical country recently overtaken by a totalitarian regime, Leo struggles through military school until his brother's illness leads to an existential crisis. Meanwhile, Malonia's rightful prince plots a counterrevolution from his parallel existence in modern-day England. An anticlimactic ending doesn't requite Banner's vigorous foreshadowing; however, the two story lines, rendered in earnest prose, are individually compelling.
