Future scientist Madeline is reeling from her grandfather's death, her sister's worsening genetic blood disorder (which Madeline shares), and starting middle school. She copes by writing SOPs ("standard operating procedures"), many of which deal with the classmates she reluctantly befriends, leading to a Harriet the Spy–like outcome. Madeline's prickly independence and sense of herself make for a character whose evolution is highly satisfying.
