1820s Virginia farm girl Katherine's brother drowns after inheriting an English estate, leaving Katherine as the sole heir. Romance and mystery are the novel's real focus, while a lackluster attempt at gothic horror never really coalesces; the Victorian tropes are obvious but nevertheless entertaining.
