Killed in a terrorist attack, Cassina becomes a "para-spirit" who's able to inhabit human minds. After finding the bomber who murdered her, she must stop him from striking again. Readers may be put off by Cassina's flippant voice, and the redemptive ending is contrived. But the narrative is complex and suspenseful; Singer takes intriguing risks with a challenging subject.
