French's retellings of seven well-known fairy tales, including "Hansel and Gretel," "Cinderella," and "The Shoemaker and the Elves," are lively and well suited to reading aloud. The storytelling language reflects the oral origins of the tales with plenty of repetition and onomatopoeia ("patter, patter, patter," "CRASH!"). The stiff illustrations, however, contrast with the approachable, engaging stories.
