Spaz, an epileptic boy, lives in a violent, impoverished society where nearly everyone is illiterate. His encounter with an elderly man called Ryter, who believes in the power of books, results in the two making a daring visit to Eden, a community endowed with fresh air and technological marvels. The futuristic setting is intriguing, but the theme is heavy-handed and Spaz's first-person voice is not entirely convincing.
