Partly inspired by the just-announced (and fantastic) 2025 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award winners, the theme of this issue of The Horn Book Herald is: Animals. It’s a perennial and well-loved topic: see, for example, Guide/Reviews Database subject Animals and last week’s intermediate and middle-school section of Notes from the Horn Book.
Below you’ll find recent books about dogs, birds, raccoons, farm animals, dinosaurs, and rabbits. Our cat-loving readers (and Horn Book editors) may take issue with their absence, but here are some and many, many others. Fun fact: you can often find felines prowling picture-book pages that go unremarked upon in the text. How many cats can you discover? (Hundreds? Thousands? Millions, billions, trillions?)
Stop by Booth 705 at ALA Annual bright and early Monday morning to grab your free copy of the July/August Horn Book Magazine. There may even be a special guest! Copies will also be available for purchase on our website; better yet, subscribe.
