(3) K-3 Illustrated by Christine Davenier. Nell and her dog Rusty are elated to be digging in the springtime soil. Nell's fastidious neighbor, Norman, despises getting dirty, but he can't resist the allure of finding treasures and building a "dirt museum" and eventually joins in until he's as mud-covered as Nell. The simple story and wispy illustrations convey the easy joys of an imaginative day outdoors.

In this version of the much-loved song, round-faced mamis and papis, children, babies, and others cavort in a brightly painted bus "on the journey to the town." Lizzie's mother is about to have a baby, so Lizzie must help her grandma with the wash; the feeling of a job well done and a surprise visitor make the day-long, arduous production worth it. Though they stumble with figures and faces, the pencil and watercolor illustrations aptly evoke the 1889 setting. Plenty of old-fashioned, pioneer-life details are woven into the text.

(4) PS Illustrated by Susan Swan. This concept book from the author-illustrator team of Pick a Circle, Gather Squares is a cheerful introduction to numbers and counting. Two siblings and their mother visit a local farm stand, where their shopping starts with one watermelon and ends with twelve ears of corn. The rhymes can be a mouthful, but the colorful digital illustrations successfully convey a summertime mood.

(4) K-3 When Cat gets caught inside a fish van, her kittens are left alone under the bridge. Luckily, old Dog comes along and takes care of them until their mom's safe return. Small details (e.g., the graffiti on the bridge) make the difference in the otherwise sweet and watery illustrations. The well-worn unlikely-friendship plot ends with a nice (albeit small) twist.
