(2) K-3 Illustrated by Gabriela Larios. "The nipa hut is family too." Yelena Mendoza lives in a traditional nipa hut in the Philippines with her family. Made from palm leaves and bamboo, the structure has stood for many generations, lovingly cared for and repaired by its inhabitants when it needs "a change of clothes." During a big storm, the nipa hut "sways," "shakes," and "flinches." A gust of wind pushes the windows open, bringing in rain and cold; are "Yelena and the nipa hut...no match for the storm"? With Papa's help, they make it through -- though afterward the nipa hut is in need of repairs. "'You will be okay,' [Yelena] says. 'Thank you for taking care of us.'" Abalos's warm text is true to a child's perspective; Larios's color-saturated illustrations, teeming with wildlife and plants native to the Philippines, have a compellingly naif quality. Details in the art enhance the story: Papa has a prosthetic leg; a framed portrait on the wall might be Yelena and baby brother Marco's mother, whom the story doesn't mention. An author's note dives deeper into the history and architectural influence of the nipa hut (its structural flexibility inspired the first skyscraper), the Philippines, and climate change and includes a glossary of Tagalog words.

(2) K-3 Photographs by Shelley Rotner. There are many reasons why people seek sanctuary. Some families are uprooted because of war or economic hardship. This book addresses these situations and also alerts readers to the growing number of families who need sanctuary because of environmental or climate changes. The text sets up the premise that many people have "to escape -- fleeing fires, floods, drought, or war -- because it's not safe for them to stay anymore." Stunning photographs of individual children, intergenerational relatives, and friends immediately catch the eye with bright colors, varied moods, and engaged expressions, presenting a truly global and inclusive representation of childhood and family. The photos are punctuated by quotes from the children (set in speech bubbles) about why they left their homes and about their experiences acclimating to their new lives. The book touches on the experience of leaving home amidst an emergency, arduous travel with many temporary stops before finding a safer home, and cultural and language barriers, as well as new friendships, an appreciation for the traditions of home, and the discovery of new interests such as art, athletics, or music. Appended with resources for parents, caregivers, educators, and children, this accessible volume is an affirmation of survival and a resource for helping others

(2) K-3 Becker's (The Tree and the River, rev. 3/23) latest wordless fantasy takes readers to a post-apocalyptic future. Animals in a flooded zoo huddle on exposed bits of dry land; they are tended by an enormous yellow robot with wind turbines mounted on its back. Becker works in landscape orientation, with the robot's verticality dominating most compositions. Viewers get a sen is place beyond the endless water, the decay of the zoo buildings, and the utter absence of humans. But he does give them some semblance of hope. As the water rises, the robot fashions an ark of sorts. The animals file aboard, and they all set sail on a journey that gives Becker ample opportunity to explore the moods of his seascape. An encounter with another robot, this one blue and powered by solar panels, leads to sanctuary. Its hot air balloon accommodates both robots and all the animals, carrying them to an Edenic island, lush with vegetation and complete with waterfall and rainbow. Becker's characteristically virtuosic ink and watercolor paintings offer much for young readers to pore over and peer at, which may be enough for many. Others will find the story and the questions it poses lingering long after the book is closed.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Emily Sutton. Davies showcases the important role that plants play on Earth as consumers of carbon, producers of oxygen, and mitigators of the effects of human-induced global warming. The meaning of "green" is creatively expanded from the color we associate with plants to encompass the process of photosynthesis and the components of plant cells in which it takes place. "Their green isn't just a color...this green catches the energy in sunlight." Sutton's lush illustrations, naturally featuring many shades of green, fill the pages with tendrils, roots, and leaves at macro and micro scales and portray ecosystems on land and water throughout Earth's history as teeming with plants and animals. As Davies explains the history of plant life and its transformation into today's fossil fuels, the story shifts into how human exploitation of ancient life has meant the release of too much carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. Luckily, today's green plants in the sea and across various environments fight back against climate change. We must "remember that GREEN is the most important color in the world."

(2) YA Eighth grader Emily Laurence aspires to be a social media influencer, if only her mom would let her post pictures of herself on her YouHappy account. For now, she'll have to settle for producing the Cedarview Middle School podcast. Before she can gain internet fame, Emily has a lot to juggle in the real world. She and her mom have moved in with Mom's new boyfriend and his obnoxious eight-year-old son; and a new classmate, Amelie, adds an unwelcome dynamic to Emily's friendships. Emily channels her frustrations into producing a podcast story about an upcoming climate march, but the principal thinks the topic isn't appropriate for middle school students and cancels the episode. When a school visit from (fictional) social media influencer (and Emily's idol) Asha Jamil is rescheduled for the same day as the climate march, Emily can't keep quiet about her suspicions of censorship. She tries to emulate her namesake, Emily Post -- whom our protagonist sees as one of the world's first influencers -- to help her manage with tact and courtesy. With a relatable and thoughtful main character, the story offers timely reflections on social media, complicated friendships, climate activism, and what it really means to have influence.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Alex Boersma. Levy and Boersma's gentle and accessible introduction to climate change centers on carbon and its ubiquitous presence in Earth's living and nonliving systems. Brief definitions of key chemistry terms and concepts precede the title page, and statements in the first few pages lay out the crisis we face with global warming: "After hundreds of years and billions of people burning fuels, there's too much carbon in the air!" The remainder of the book is hopeful, showing how kelp forests, mangroves, and even dirt can "soak up" the excess carbon. Boersma's illustrations represent carbon as delicate white dots swirling in the air over sunny city scenes and landscapes or crowded into the clouds of darker emissions from power plants. The book ends with a call to action: "For the Earth to keep helping us, we must help the Earth." The meaningful solutions presented include alternative energies, public transportation, and scientific innovation. Additional information about global warming and things readers can do to help are included in the back matter.

(1) K-3 Redniss's assured, measured, and elegant meditation on life during our current environmental crisis begins during a record-breaking heatwave with a crystal-clear proclamation: "No way. Too hot." The spare, evocative, and arguably unsettling text ("Try not to burn") is contextualized by imagery of a family trying to cool off at a city beach. Equally accomplished, the illustrations feature elongated figures and loose continuity between each double-page spread. A thin, dark, wavering line is employed for both figures and austere backgrounds that mostly consist of high horizon lines topped by a jumble of building-like forms. Color plays a prominent role in the narrative, yet only two colors (other than black and white) are used -- red and blue. Stretched across the entire spread, a singular flat red color is given texture, depth, and contrast. As the unbearably hot day continues, clouds form and a single blue raindrop dramatically pierces the all-red page. Two raindrops are precursors to a downpour, illustrated by bright blue vertical streaks that appear to vibrate down the page. As day turns to evening, the color blue eventually takes over the final spreads, suggesting relief from the sweltering heat -- and perhaps a degree of hope for the residents of a steadily warming planet. Imbued with a fine-art aesthetic, this is an ambitious yet accessible work. An honest narrative of and for today, brilliantly told.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Dominique Ramsey. "Everyone starts small and then grows.” Scanlon gives readers and listeners a ­better understanding of the natural world through a lyrical exploration of how all its elements are interconnected. Everything is growing and doing well until Sun becomes “too hot,” which results in Tree overheating. Dry conditions caused by Sun eventually lead to Fire. The flames can only be cooled by Rain. As the temperature drops, Fire whispers, “I’m tired,” and “half the world, it seems, lies down to sleep.” While this dormant period may look like the end, Ramsey’s dynamic digital illustrations capture what’s still happening underneath Soil. Tree’s roots stretch down deeper into the dirt. Berry provides nutrients for Bug in a burrow, and seeds begin to germinate. Eventually, the resulting plants burst forth through the ground as small stalks, starting the cycle all over again. An author’s note explains how Earth’s ecosystems work together to look out for one another, particularly after “environmental traumas” such as fires and the “myriad effects of climate change.” It also includes a list of organizations young people can look to for ways to help.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Diana Sudyka. The day Angela is born, the glacier Snaefellsjokull (a real Icelandic landmark) appears from behind a cloudy cover. Later, her father helps her learn the glacier's name as they hike to the peak: "Snae (left foot) fells (right foot) jo (left foot) kull (right foot)." Angela looks at, listens to, and speaks to the glacier, and bares her hands to feel its icy surface as she shares her emotions (fears such as falling off her bike; missing her dad when he's at work). Sudyka's contrasting, often translucent watercolors balance the cool swaths of blues and greens across the face of the glacier with lines etched across its frozen surface. Over time, Angela's days fill up with "school, friends, violin, soccer, bike rides, homework." But something isn't quite right, and her father asks if she's been to Snaefellsjokull lately. Scott's narrative uncovers the healing, centering power of nature and reciprocity of care between humankind and the natural world. Though the story does not outwardly call for environmental conservation, a note from interdisciplinary artist-researcher Angela Rawlings (Scott's friend and the book's inspiration) discusses the detrimental impact of climate change on Snaefellsjokull.

(1) K-3 Becker explores many big ideas--including war, humanity's impact on the environment, and the resilience of nature over time--through a science-fiction lens. The wordless narrative focuses on an idyllic forested valley split by a river. Multiple double-page spreads depict the river across an undefined span of time and chronicle the relationship between two groups, one on either side of the river: an agricultural-leaning society shown in red clothing and a blue-clad industrialized community. The river is diverted, varying forms of infrastructure (from thatched-roof buildings to futuristic skylines) are built and razed, and conflicts arise between the neighboring factions; a single tree remains a constant presence, even after an environmental disaster leaves the land uninhabitable. Becker then shifts the view to a more intimate and hopeful series of panels to reveal the now-deteriorating tree releasing an acorn into the river, setting into motion the process for new life to begin. The pencil, gouache, and digitally painted illustrations are imaginative, precise, and enigmatic. As with Journey (rev. 9/13) and sequels, Becker's world-building feels cinematic thanks to his dramatic use of color and light. This picture book is sure to spark much discussion regarding humanity's relationships with and responsibilities toward one another and the natural world.

(2) 4-6 Sixth grader Amelia MacGuffin is a worrier. As the eldest of five siblings, she worries about everything from changing the part in her hair to the MacGuffin family's tight finances. So when the mythically lucky wooden staff that is the centerpiece of the annual Dragonfly Day Festival goes missing from Urchin Beach's town square, Amelia decides to channel her worry into finding the thief. Her investigation is hampered by the unexpected arrival of a lost dog in her backyard, a flood that threatens both the festival and the delicate ecosystem that supports the native dragonflies, and the sheer number of possible suspects. With the help of a local mystery author, a trusted librarian, and her own common sense, Amelia surprises herself by solving the crime. But bringing the (beloved and well-known) criminal to justice will prove to be a much harder task. This charming small-town mystery romp will appeal to a wide range of junior detectives, especially those who are also invested in issues of climate change and environmental preservation. Amelia's close-knit beach community of family, friends, and neighbors forms a relatable cast of secondary characters who provide both support and comic relief. Fans of Yan Glaser's resourceful Vanderbeeker clan and Pennypacker's problem-solving protagonists will be delighted that the ending suggests this is just the first of Amelia's adventures.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Olivia Sua. "Water days are busy days, grateful, laughing, thirsty days." A young girl tells of her Cuban neighborhood's experience of the "water man's" once-every-five-days visit to deliver water for all the residents' needs. Engle's narrator shares all parts of the process breezily, from the lyrical way Bisabuelita talks to her fruit trees, telling them "she'll soon get their toes wet," to less pleasant realities like having to wait "to flush the stinky toilet. Ick." The "fish lady" bikes into town next and lets the girl add mosquito larvae–eating fish to the family's water supply, helping to prevent the spread of disease. Sua's painted cut-paper illustrations in a rich pastel color palette are as inviting as the girl's cheerful voice, which grows somber when recounting Bisabuelita's memories about how the neighborhood's water has dried up since she was young. The book culminates with an image of the family using their replenished water and a line that sums up how this tightly knit group views water day: "a river of joy that flows for my whole thirsty familia." Back matter includes an author's note about Engle's inspiration for the story, as well as information on the global water crisis and mosquitofish.

(2) YA Can a "tocororo-girl" and a "song-boy" find love in the mountains of Costa Rica? In this novel set in 2018, two teens from vastly different worlds tell their stories in free verse poems, alternating points of view. Soleida, a talented painter, must leave Cuba after a catastrophic hurricane destroys her home and her parents are imprisoned when the "art police" discover their unsanctioned sculptures. Her journey is harrowing and mirrors the plight of many present-day "climate migrants." In California, Dariel, a gifted guitarist, flees the mansion he shares with his telenovela-star parents when wildfires destroy it. He accompanies his Cuban American abuelo to Costa Rica. The teens meet and begin to share their gifts of music and art. Dariel slowly uncovers Soleida's horrific story, and she begins to heal and feel empowered to search for her parents and help a cousin with a local reforestation project. Engle (Your Heart, My Sky, rev. 3/21) weaves a compelling love story balanced with an invitation to readers to consider the impact of climate change and the necessity for action now. She populates her poetry with vivid descriptions of many colorful bird species alongside lyrical references to musicians and poets giving us "something magical and scientific / at the same time." An author's note details the story's real-life inspirations.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Ashleigh Corrin. This playful and introspective book asks readers to ponder what the world would be like if things taken for granted disappeared. What if "all the birds flew away"? What if "all the water disappeared"? What if "the sun never set"? Handy presents eight of these scenarios, each one imaginatively exploring what might happen in Corrin's energetic, full-bleed illustrations dominated by vivid ambers. If the birds flew away, for instance, skies would be "plainer." There's much humor here too. If the birds did indeed fly away, worms could take it easy--Corrin's illustration depicts worms lounging on beach chairs and reading books--and if all the water disappeared, soap would fail to work. (The absence of color results in some humorous crayon names: "Dirty Snow" and "Deepening Gloom.") The text succeeds on many levels; children are subtly prompted to consider the effects of climate change (if there were no more people, nature "could relax") yet to also ponder our creative contributions ("there would be no more music or art or stories or dancing"). Each scenario concludes with an exuberant statement in the affirmative to enthusiastically remind readers of the delights of their planet: "But there is WATER!" and "But there are COLORS!" The pitch-perfect ending invites discovery, asking us to contemplate the "something" missing "because it hadn't been dreamt of yet."

(2) 4-6 On Higuera's barren post-apocalyptic Earth, Pocatels rule over the Spanish-speaking Cascabels, refugees from the San Joaquin Valley, forcing them to live in squalid tent cities, endure long hours harvesting potatoes, and subsist on next to nothing. Thirteen-year-old Leandro and his younger sister, Gabi, impoverished and orphaned Cascabels, plan to escape the Pox, as their settlement is called, but when Gabi is caught stealing a strawberry from a fruit seller, their scheme is thwarted. Leandro takes the blame, and he's sent to the Center of Banishment for the theft. He's given a choice: banishment or have his consciousness transferred to an alebrije, an Old World animal drone. He chooses the alebrije: as a drone hummingbird, he's free to fly from the confines of Pocatel, but his choice comes with conditions. For one, he's tasked with finding the daughter of one of the ruling directors and returning her to Pocatel. On his quest, Leandro uncovers the lies of the government; finds La Cuna, a legendary verdant paradise of the Cascabels; and discovers what it means to be a hero. With its social and environmental commentary, this fast-paced and imaginative novel tackles issues of deception and control and leaves one with a sense of wonder that a single flap of a wing or a solitary voice can bring about unimaginable change. An epilogue gratifyingly ties this book to Higuera's Newbery Award winning The Last Cuentista (rev. 9/21).

Daunting, exhausting, sweaty, filthy, and dangerous are all words that can describe the work of the teams of firefighters who join together to contain and control wildfires. Paley and Mendoza's informative picture book gives readers a full view of the effort that goes into protecting homes, people, and habitats when these all-too-common out-of-control fires endanger lives. Technical vocabulary abounds and is well explained in Paley's clear text, which follows a team of firefighters from the first indication of a blaze until the last embers are extinguished. Reminiscent of WPA National Park posters, Mendoza's graphically striking art is energetic and engrossing. The yellows, reds, and oranges that fill the pages provide a visceral sense of a wildfire's heat, while cool blues and purples provide readers a chance to recover. The abundance of captions in and around the art informs curious readers about each piece of firefighting minutia, while sidebars provide detailed explanations where necessary. Extensive back matter includes a history of wildfire management, explaining how past policies have contributed to the now-common occurrences of massive wildfires and the increased dangers they present. Specific mentions of Indigenous "hotshot crews" and the important role Indigenous leaders have in crafting more sustainable fire management practices are very welcome.

(2) YA In 2015, lawyer Julia Olson filed Juliana v. United States on behalf of twenty-one young plaintiffs from across the country, all of whom were affected in some way by climate change (e.g., health effects, threats to their homes). The suit alleged that the government was violating their constitutional rights by promoting the fossil fuel system that was wreaking havoc on their lives, and that the government had known about these dangers for decades. The still-pending case wound its way through the legal system with dramatic twists and turns; most recently (as of this writing), a judge ruled that the plaintiffs could amend their complaint and go to trial. Rusch does a marvelous job of weaving together multiple strands into a compelling and timely narrative: an inspiring and empowering story of youth activism, a primer on the role of the judicial branch in our democracy, and a cautionary tale about the mounting dangers of climate change. It's no small task to distinguish the twenty-one young people, but Rusch liberally quotes them throughout the book, and an annotated list of characters at the beginning is paired with an update at the end (there are also sixteen pages of black-and-white photographs gathered in the middle). Additional scientific information, websites, a timeline, source notes, a glossary, and an index are also appended.

(1) K-3 This impassioned picture-book call to action for environmental stewardship opens with the image of a contemporary child tending "a little bit of land." After a spread that lays out what the land might have looked like at three different stages in the prehistoric past, we see it as it could have looked with the first humans treading upon it, a time when, following natural disasters such as fire and an ice age, it always found a way to "begin anew." Sudyka's lush spreads burst with a symphony of colors; graceful, swirling lines depict balance, such as a verdant wordless spread with bison, cranes, and other creatures sharing space. When the book shifts to the time when more and more humans move in, they no longer think of the land "except when they wanted to take from it." The palette turns from primarily vibrant greens to the dismal grays of vehicle exhaust. Two visually striking spreads show the damage humans have caused (pollution and the crowding out of flora and fauna) with the first using series of diagonal lines that radiate from the book's bottom gutter, separating the spread into wedge-shaped panels. The panels on the recto appear upside down; the following double-page spread features an inverted full-bleed image of a pollution-clogged city showing how environmental degradation "seemed unstoppable." Images return to right-side-up and the vivid colors reappear when a group of children stop to "look closely, and listen, too," tending the land with care. Back matter touches on the different epochs represented in the story and provides resources for further reading.

This nonfiction picture book spotlights the decades-long data collection project of billy barr, a contemporary citizen scientist who spells his name using all lowercase letters and has spent over fifty years living alone (not counting a skunk and pine marten) in the Rocky Mountains. To pass the time, barr began observing and measuring his natural surroundings: snowfall and snowpack, animal hibernation, wildflower blossoms, and more. After years of recording in his notebooks, he shared patterns he noticed with a scientist he knew who studied climate change. "These measurements proved that the earth was getting warmer." Now, his data is used by climate scientists around the world, and he continues to live in the mountain wilderness and collect and record data using a computer. The account unfolds chronologically using a straightforward, line break filled text. barr's name and specific location are not revealed until the concluding author's note (and brief bibliography), keeping the story focused on his process and impact rather than on the "man on the mountain" himself. Illustrations are set against plentiful white space in Jeanette Winter's trademark colorful, painterly style reminiscent of folk art. A variety of perspectives, including double-page landscapes, offer readers opportunities to connect with the setting and join the protagonist in tracking changes in it over time. The Winters here celebrate how a long-term commitment to a personal project can become an informational resource that inspires future study and action.

(2) 4-6 In this sequel to Healer of the Water Monster (rev. 7/21), Nathan and his mother and Edward and his father have moved in together. Both boys can see Holy Beings from traditional Diné stories, such as playful Dew and powerful Yitoo, water monsters from the first book. Now that Nathan is entering puberty, he will soon lose his ability to see them, and before that happens, he needs to travel to the Third World to ask Yitoo to mentor Dew. She agrees, but upon her return to the Fourth World (this world), Yitoo finds that her water is being diverted from sacred Navajo lland to be used for private swimming pools and water parks. She vows to take her water back and return it to its rightful owners, but her methods would destroy many cities and communities. Navajo author Young interweaves the atrocities of the Long Walk, Navajo traditional beliefs, and modern issues of climate change and water consumption in an action-filled adventure featuring two appealing Indigenous protagonists. Young readers are faced with big questions about identity, justice, and inherited trauma. An author's note and glossary add further context.
