(3) YA Spires's poetic writing reflects the hard work and spiritual inspiration that guided the hands of self-taught early- and mid-twentieth-century African American sculptor Edmondson. Often using handcrafted tools, he chiseled pieces ranging from biblical and historical figures to others displaying a whimsical sense of humor.
