In 1486, Lambert Simnel, orphan and scullion (and a real-life historical figure), learns that he is in fact Edward, Earl of Warwick, rightful heir to the English throne. Lambert revels in his new power but soon learns his life is in peril even from his supporters. This engaging middle-grade novel's direct, accessible narrative style provides adequate historical detail without bogging the story down.

While Rinaldi takes some liberties with the facts, this is a generally apt and compelling fictionalized account of Jane Grey, queen of England after Edward VI. Jane chronicles her life from her stay with Henry VIII and Katharine Parr when she was nine until her beheading at the age of sixteen--a result of her father-in-law's plot to keep Mary from the throne. With an emphasis on dialogue, Mayer retells Twain's well-known story about the prince and the poor boy who swap clothing for a lark and end up in trouble when they are mistaken for each other. An author's note provides background information about Twain's novel and the real King Edward VI. Lippincott's realistic watercolors portray the wretchedness of the lower classes and the sumptuous wealth of the castle.
