Subjects such as chattel slavery and the Fugitive Slave Act are handled matter-of-factly. Pre-Civil-War-era paintings, engravings, and photos show the major players and give a sense of the time period and culture, while maps help readers follow the events of the narrative. The extensive back matter includes a timeline, author's note, endnotes, selected bibliography, and index (not seen).
