A woman embarks on a three-hundred-mile canoe journey down a river. She paddles alone through rapids, portages around waterfalls, and sleeps outside every night. Cooper's watercolor and pencil sketches illuminate the details with a rhythmic mix of vignettes and landscapes. The present-tense text focuses on the journey rather than the destination; we become so absorbed in the experience that we notice every detail by the end. An author's note and more about the Hudson River are appended. Reading list.

Talbott limns the life and legacy of Thomas Cole, the nineteenth-century American painter best known for his landscapes and as the originator of the Hudson River school of art. The text is straightforward yet consistently infused with the sense of curiosity that drove Cole to explore and make art. In his own illustrations, Talbott alternately uses narrative-furthering vignettes and sweeping nature scenes. An appended note works in Cole reproductions.

James E. Ransome.
A young girl narrates this account (based on a true story) of the long-ago year she helped her tugboat captain father deliver the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The tugboat's journey--up the Hudson River to pick up the barge with the tree and downriver again--is described in child-friendly detail. Jewel-toned paintings capture views of the city, the river, and the unusual, festive cargo.

Ever since her mother's unexpected departure from their lighthouse home on the Hudson River, Louise has remained convinced that one day soon she will return. While at times the plot seems overly dramatic, Louise's reaction to her parents' separation resonates truthfully. Details about the role of the lighthouse keeper in the 1930s are woven somewhat awkwardly into the story.

Illustrated by
Lynd Ward.
When the brightly lit George Washington Bridge is built, the little red lighthouse thinks that its important work has been taken away. There is real personality in the pictures and story and a satisfying ending when the lighthouse discovers its light is still needed. This fascimile edition uses, for the first time, the actual watercolors that Lynd Ward painted rather than his three-color art based on the watercolors.
