This sequel to the dystopic Children of Icarus continues its harrowing violence and desperate search for salvation.

(4) YA Lois (Fallout) has her dream gig on the all-teen Scoop newspaper, great BFFs, and she's finally going to meet her online crush (alias "SmallvilleGuy") when he visits Metropolis. But mutant teens and mad scientists sidetrack her fairy tale. Bond's Lois Lane is lovable and complex, but readers may struggle with the lack of plot progression; not much happens in this romance-focused installment.

(4) YA Kicked out of college in Anchorage after one semester, eighteen-year-old Eddie takes a year-long job with a newspaper in isolated rural Alaska to prove he's "ready to be a college student again"; instead, Eddie begins smuggling marijuana. Eddie can be an obnoxious horn-dog and is a pretty unlikable protagonist overall, but vivid setting details give readers a sense of the wide-open lonesomeness of the tundra.

(3) YA Railhead introduced a world of sentient trains and interplanetary travel. Now, via a new portal, human thief Zen and android girl Nova find a galaxy containing the secret of the intergalactic rails' origins. Meanwhile, the new empress summons a thief to uncover Zen's role in her father's death. Diversity in alien species and the mystery of the rails should maintain science-fiction fans' interest. Glos.

(4) YA Still grieving her grandmother's recent passing, freshman Abbi hopes that college will provide a fresh start. Waking one morning back in 1983, however, sets her on an unexpected journey--one involving a handsome fellow time-traveler as well as family secrets, including her grandmother's mysterious last words to "find the baby." Despite contrived dialogue, the plot should entertain time-travel fans.

(3) YA Former acrobat and thief Rémy Brunel and love interest Thaddeaus Rec return (The Diamond Thief; The Ruby Airship), here on an airship into colonial India's forests. While an unjust raja and a sinister cult threaten to wake a slumbering terror, fate grants Rémy an unexpected chance to find her long-lost twin brother. The energetic plot recalls classic action stories with a magical steampunk twist.

(4) YA An unnamed sixteen-year-old girl becomes one of the chosen teens to traverse the labyrinth surrounding their city--eventually, they're told, to become angels. Yet in the maze there are terrors, monsters, and hard truths for which none of the teens are prepared. Much is left unresolved, but fans of the Hunger Games and Divergent books looking for a gorier next read should enjoy this paranormal dystopia.

This collection of forty-three autobiographical short stories runs the gamut of high-school topics: family, friends, class, crushes, parties, awkwardness, bullying, sex, and more. Featuring such YA authors as Carrie Mesrobian, Steve Brezenoff, Pete Hautman, and Joseph Bruchac, the stories are painful, humorous, embarrassing, nostalgic, and insightful. But, as with many collections, some tales are stronger than others. Ind.

(4) YA Wren wants nothing more than to get picked by her "deity," Dot, as a chosen one. But visions of another life cause Wren and others to question Dot's holiness and her teachings that nothing exists beyond the trees of their idyllic, Eden-esque home. Despite flat secondary characters, the allegory-heavy plot is buoyed by musings on free will and happiness.

With the help of her fellow reporters--and a mysterious internet friend who goes by the screen name SmallvilleGuy--Lois investigates the Warheads, a group of sinister cyberbullies. Clark Kent is a modern-day Ned to Lois's Nancy Drew in this thrilling, fast-paced mystery.

(3) YA During WWII, Hitler unleashed a virus that turned most of the world into vampires. Decades later, human teen Sophie lives in Haven with the other "Immunes." After her best friend is murdered she decides to investigate (despite warnings from her vampire secret-love-interest), and she discovers an unsavory plot involving Immune babies. A unique and creepy sci-fi/horror alt-history.

(4) YA Famed French jewel thief and acrobat Rémy Brunel (The Diamond Thief) is determined to discover the truth of her origins, even as she is pursued by police and manipulated by a hypnotist. Gosling crafts a world full of steampunk-style mechanisms and criminal intrigue, and though it is occasionally difficult to track the many characters in this sequel, it's an entertaining, fast-paced ride.

(4) YA Grace (Grace and the Guiltless) still searches for the outlaws who murdered her family. Meanwhile, she has become a bounty hunter and questions her decision to leave the Ndeh tribe and especially Joe, for whom she harbors romantic feelings. A chance to confront the Guiltless Gang reignites her struggle to balance vengeance and romance. An action-packed Western, despite some trite contrivances.

(4) YA Relocated to an old family home, sixteen-year-old Bayley becomes fascinated with her mother's cousin Celina, who disappeared there as a teen. Propelled by visions and messages, Bayley risks her own safety to solve Celina's death. The boo! moments provide chills, as does Celina's ghostly presence as both victim and manipulator, but Bayley's own drama, particularly on the romantic front, is pedestrian.

(2) YA When the master of her circus commands aerialist Remy to steal a gem during a heavily guarded Tower of London event, she nicks it only to find it's a fake. Plot turns involve circus folk, Remy's tragic past, and her romance with policeman Thaddeus. The action--much of it in a steampunk technological realm controlled by the (real) diamond's magic--is vivid and engrossing.

(4) YA Harrop--a British teen with an online following--invites readers to see the world through her eyes with this sketchbook-style diary. Illustrations of scenes and objects from Harrop's everyday life are uniquely stylized and intimate. The accompanying commentary is too scattered and off-the-cuff to add much to the arresting images, but young artists may find creative inspiration in this appealing, browsable collection.

(4) YA Seventeen-year-old Grace Milton embodies a familiar trope in Westerns: a vigilante protagonist who seeks justice for the gang who murdered her family. With the help of Joe, a Ndeh (Apache) adoptee, Grace learns the tracking and survival skills she needs to avenge the murder. While characters are sometimes stereotypical, sometimes idealized, remarkable setting descriptions and cinematic action abound.
