Illustrated by
Nancy Carpenter.
When Grandmother sends her family out to gather firewood, each person comes back with shredded clothing and a wild excuse for returning empty-handed. Grandmother gets no firewood, but she makes a warm quilt with scraps from the torn clothing instead. The rationale for the "far-fetched stories" is never given, but the conclusion is one anyone can enjoy. Pen-and-ink with watercolor illustrations enhance the text.
