"At home, everyone has a passion," says a young brown-skinned girl with corkscrew curls. What is her passion? A double-page scene in art class reveals the answer: while her schoolmates paint animals, she's drawn a spiral surrounded by formulas and graphs because she adores "MATH!" To the young narrator, playground structures are polygon shapes, and skipping stones create concentric circles. Tanco's spare, succinct writing is paired with striking, casually detailed illustrations.
