"Even in the old country, Mama was shy," and now that the Russian immigrant lives in America, she is even more withdrawn. Yet when Papa gets sick on Halloween, Mama accompanies Anya and her siblings as they go trick-or-treating. The bright illustrations convey traditional Halloween fun; the wordy text is rather slow. The concluding material for parents and teachers unfortunately turns this story into a lesson plan.
