An old cup engraved with the initials S. C. is the connection between Sammy Carl, a young boy, and past generations of his family. His mother, Samantha Caroline, sipped from the cup as a child, as did his grandfather, Sam Charles, and before that, his great aunt, Serena Carlotta, who was an immigrant. Though the quiet, reflective narrative lacks tension, the watercolors evoke a keen sense of past and present.
