His mother, Samantha Caroline, sipped from the cup as a child, as did his grandfather, Sam Charles, and before that, his great aunt, Serena Carlotta, who was an immigrant. Though the quiet, reflective narrative lacks tension, the watercolors evoke a keen sense of past and present.
