Garvey's father wants to turn him into an athlete, like his sister Angie, but Garvey would rather get lost in a book, listen to music, or dream about galaxies. In addition to pressure at home, he faces endless taunting at school for his weight. When Garvey meets the "skim-milk boy" Manny, who has albinism, he asks how Manny stands the teasing. "I look strange. No changing that. / Is there more to me? / Sure. Kids yell 'albino boy.' / I don't turn around. / Choose the name you answer to. / No one can do that but you." Per Grimes's author's note, this graphic-novel adaptation leaves two-thirds of the original book's (Garvey's Choice, rev. 9/16) tanka poems intact, with only small changes to the rest of them. The verses are given a new visual life with excellent page designs and clever illustrations, including the closing spread showing Garvey singing into a mic and his father playing the guitar, with floating musical notes uniting them in song. An unusually effective use of the graphic-novel format to bring poetry alive.

While preparing for the track championship and competing in a new event--the hurdles--Defenders co-captain Lu, who has albinism, learns a secret about his father that could potentially upend their close relationship. Meanwhile, Lu also must face a nemesis from his past. Reynolds takes great care in crafting multidimensional characters who confront real dilemmas and demonstrate that our shortcomings do not ultimately define us.

(2) YA Sunny (Akata Witch) survives separation from her spirit face because her visions guide her coven to where the living and spirit worlds coincide; there Sunny can take on supernatural Ekwensu before she destroys the earth. Sunny grows stronger physically and emotionally in this volume. The West African mythological foundation of this contemporary Nigeria–set fantasy series will satisfy fans of Okorafor's signature brand of magic.

(3) 4-6 In 1346, Adrian, an English twelve-year-old with albinism, runs away to join the battle against the pagan Scots. It's a journey of self-discovery, new friends, and the realization that war isn't clear-cut or desirable. Erskine makes the Middle Ages setting accessible to readers, who will enjoy Adrian's adventures and applaud his cleverness and bravery in the face of dangerous situations.

(3) YA When Duncan enters his new boarding school room at the start of senior year, he finds a stack of CDs that reveal the devastating story of the room's former occupant. Duncan delves into albino Tim Macbeth's history and his tempestuous relationship with Vanessa, and also contemplates how Tim's story relates to his own. This unusual tragedy is well-plotted and intriguing.

(2) YA Tanzanian Habo is an albino. He is being pursued by an ivory poacher who is trying to murder Habo for his body parts (superstition holds they can be used for good-luck charms). Sullivan excels at conveying Habo's feelings of freakishness and alienation, and her efforts to draw attention to this real-life human rights abuse are commendable. A glossary and resources are appended.

(2) YA Sunny, albino daughter of Nigerian parents, is used to being called a witch; even so, it's a surprise to learn she is one. Along with her coven, she must take on Okotoko the Black Hat, a serial killer who preys on children. Sunny's world of pepper soup and afrobeat music, the audacious personalities, and Okorafor's lively writing make this offering stand out.

(4) 4-6 In this religiously charged story set in the backwoods of early nineteenth-century upstate New York, teenaged Hannah's addled father sells her to two neighboring brutes for a year of service. Hannah, an outsider with one green eye and one white, is a strong, self-sufficient young woman. Stock secondary characters and a bit too much melodrama mar an otherwise intriguingly written novel.

(3) YA An albino, fourteen-year-old Harold is an outcast in his dead-end town. When he runs away to join a small, struggling circus, he finds and loses friends, makes enemies, falls in (unrequited) love, and comes to see beneath the surface of things. Harold's absorbing journey to self-acceptance is marked by unusual characters and situations; Lawrence's prose is vivid and compelling.

(4) YA A sheltered albino girl, half white and half Chinese, kisses a dangerous older boy and naively assumes she is pregnant. Cordelia runs away to Seattle, where she tracks down the boy, boards in a brothel, and finds temporary fame as a (spurious) mind reader. Set in 1918, the novel features intriguing characterizations and a trenchant first-person voice, but the plot relies heavily on coincidence.
