While preparing for the track championship and competing in a new event--the hurdles--Defenders co-captain Lu, who has albinism, learns a secret about his father that could potentially upend their close relationship. Meanwhile, Lu also must face a nemesis from his past. Reynolds takes great care in crafting multidimensional characters who confront real dilemmas and demonstrate that our shortcomings do not ultimately define us.

(2) 4-6 Track series. In this series' third entry (Ghost; Patina), Sunny, the track team's best miler, decides he doesn't want to be a runner. Coach suggests he try the discus, a choice reflected in the novel's diary-entry structure that spins around incidents or memories, cumulatively revealing the tragic origins of Sunny's track career. The story's slow build lets Sunny's strengths and vulnerabilities gain him a place in our hearts.

(1) 4-6 Track series. First introduced in Ghost, Patina ("Patty") and her younger sister live with their godparents after their father's sudden death and mother's double amputation from diabetes. Track-and-field scenes (and drama) are interspersed with home and school scenes (and drama), with excellent insights into the life of an African American middle schooler; Patty's interactions as the new girl at an elite academy are especially humorous and authentic.

(2) 4-6 Track series. In this series-starter, Castle "Ghost" Cranshaw is an African American young man with a proclivity for getting into trouble, fighting, and running, stemming from an incident with his now-imprisoned father. When Ghost impulsively races and bests the citywide track team's fastest sprinter, the coach sees potential in the seventh grader. Wonderfully dynamic Ghost's first-person narrative is one with which young readers will readily identify.
