Illustrated by
Dileep Joshi.
In a rhymed adaptation of an Indian Panchatantra tale, a jackal, blue from falling into indigo dye, becomes king of the animals. He banishes his jackal relatives who've always treated him badly but loses his position when the others realize that he's just a jackal. The striking illustrations are in the "repetitive and highly symbolic" Western Indian Warli style, traditionally white rice-flour paintings on mud.

Wild Canine Pups series.
Each workmanlike volume offers an overview of the titular wild canine species, covering habitat, diet, pack life, etc., with a focus on the birth and development of pups/kits. Though somewhat stiffly written, the books provide basic information; some text is repeated across volumes. Crisp, close-up stock photos in full color portray the cute pups and formidable adults. Wild Dogs series.
Coyotes and African wild dogs live in packs; jackals and red foxes live alone. Pet dogs evolved from wolves; dingoes are descended from dogs returned to the wild. Each book in this series describes the habitat, characteristics, and behavior of a type of wild dog. The text is easy to read but fairly simplistic, however the open format and clear photos make the small-sized books accessible. A list of websites is included. Bib., glos., ind. [Review covers these Wild Dogs titles: African Wild Dogs, Coyotes, Dingoes, Jackals, Red Foxes, Wolves.]
