The Jouberts, National Geographic filmmakers and photographers, observed and photographed a baby leopard in Botswana over four-plus years. An evocative text and excellent photos follow Legadema's (which means "light from the sky" in Setswana) development as she learns climbing and hunting skills and eventually becomes mother to her own cubs. More leopard information and a photographers' note are appended. Reading list, websites.

Travels with Gannon & Wyatt series.
This new series emphasizes global citizenship, multiculturalism, and wildlife conservation. Twin brothers encounter wounded lions, the prey of poachers (Botswana); in an unforgiving Canadian wilderness, they must embark on a search-and-rescue mission for missing members of their expedition (Rainforest). Based on real boys' experiences, the fictionalized journal entries, illustrated with black-and-white photos, are convincing, but the voices aren't always distinguishable. Review covers these Gannon & Wyatt titles: Botswana and Great Bear Rainforest.

In search of African elephants in Botswana, the Lewins provide careful observations of animals in their habitats that lend insight into animal behaviors and survival tactics. Throughout, a cheerful tone combines with reverence for the beauty and variety of nature. Betsy Lewin's humorous, emotive sketches and Ted Lewin's full-page paintings illustrate their encounters.
